description.abstractThis study is a content analysis of a selection of environmental awareness picture books. The analysis was conducted to determine the appropriateness of these picture books for teaching environmental education to elementary-school aged children. It was found that most of the environmental education picture books used literary conventions that were inappropriate in terms of children's cognitive understanding, as well as in their understanding of environmental education, but that these problems would not prevent the child from understanding and enjoying most of the books. Ultimately, it was determined that the ideal environmental education picture book is a quality picture book that encourages appreciation of nature and environmental issues in a positive and developmentally appropriate manner.en
